Kuala Lumpur, 28 September 2010: National deposit insurer, Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PIDM), today officially launched its education programme for secondary school and tertiary students throughout Malaysia, as part of its ongoing initiatives to further enhance public understanding of deposit insurance.
PIDM’s education programme, also known as PIDM Project MoneySmart, seeks to instil the habit of savings and prudent financial management among students in schools and higher learning institutions. The launch of this programme was officiated by Dr. Khair bin Mohamad Yusof, Deputy Director General of Education (Policy Development and Education Sector).
“The main objective of this programme is to educate students about deposit insurance protection, the role of PIDM as the national deposit insurer, as well as healthy money management skills including budgeting, saving and wise spending among the younger generation,” said Mr. Jean Pierre Sabourin, Chief Executive Officer of PIDM.
Sabourin further emphasised, “Sound financial knowledge and skills must be inculcated in our younger generation now. By the time they start their first job and start a family, they should already be capable of making smart and informed financial decisions and continue to do so throughout their lives.”
In the implementation of PIDM Project MoneySmart, PIDM has designed learning tools to engage students to acquire knowledge in a fun way – the MoneySmart Online Game, MoneySmart Board Game and the Bijak Wang comic book. PIDM is reaching out to students through road shows and talks in secondary schools, colleges and universities.
“The learning tools take the students through actual life stages, starting from pursuing education, and moving on to joining the work force and pursuing a career, getting married, raising children and preparing for retirement. They learn to apply the principles relating to financial management to different life stages towards achieving personal financial success,” explained Sabourin.
“Since the soft launch of the programme in July 2010, we have covered over 100 secondary schools and some 25 institutions of higher learning throughout Malaysia. We would have completed a total of 200 secondary schools and 50 institutions of higher learning by the end of November 2010. We will continue this programme annually in furtherance of our mandate of providing deposit insurance protection and contributing to financial system stability in Malaysia,” added Sabourin.
The MoneySmart Online Game provides participants with the opportunity to create financial wealth with different career choices and life experiences. It is interactive and easy to play. Participants will answer questions throughout the game to accumulate points. Students can participate as individuals as well as in groups with friends, teachers and family members to stand a chance to win cash prizes.
For the individual category, the first, second and third winners in each section – lower secondary, upper secondary and tertiary – will each receive a cash prize of RM3,000, RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively. In the group category, the first, second and third winning groups in each section will receive a cash prize of RM6,000, RM4,000 and RM2,000 respectively. The top three schools with the highest number of participants will win desktop computers.
