PIDM successfully implements education programme

Kuala Lumpur, 31 March 2011: National deposit insurer, Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PIDM), successfully implemented its inaugural Education Programme in 2010, which was effective in enhancing financial awareness and literacy among students in the participating secondary schools and institutions of higher learning.

The Education Programme is part of PIDM’s ongoing initiatives to further enhance public understanding of deposit insurance, a major component of sound personal financial management.

“Although 2010 was only the first year of the Education Programme, we are pleased to note the positive impact this programme has made in changing the mindset of students towards cultivating a good financial management habit,” said Encik Md. Khairuddin Hj. Arshad, Chief Operating Officer of PIDM.

Launched officially on 28 September 2010 by Dr. Khair bin Mohamad Yusof, Deputy Director General of Education (Policy Development and Education Sector), Ministry of Education, the programme involved road shows and talks in over 200 secondary schools and some 50 institutions of higher learning throughout Malaysia.

“We will continue this programme annually in furtherance of our mandate of providing protection and contributing to financial system stability in Malaysia. In 2011, we will continue to conduct road shows and talks in another 250 schools and 50 institutions. At the same time, our MoneySmart Online Game Contest will be further enhanced to make it more challenging in line with developments in the overall national financial landscape,” added Khairuddin.

As part of PIDM’s Education Programme namely PIDM Project MoneySmart, the MoneySmart Online Game Contest, which ran from April to November 2010, was one of the education platforms developed and used in delivering the programme. Prizes were offered to students for Individual and Group participation as well as to secondary schools with the highest number of participants.

“The MoneySmart Online Game attracted participation from almost 8,000 students nationwide. PIDM is pleased to announce and award desktop computers to the three secondary schools with the highest number of students participating in the MoneySmart Online Game,” said Khairuddin at a special ceremony held recently to present three (3) desktop computers to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bukit Jelutong, Selangor as the school with the highest number of participants.

SMK Jitra, Kedah and SMK Taman Seraya, Ampang, Selangor are the schools with the second and third highest number of participants respectively and would therefore, receive two (2) computers and one (1) computer respectively.

The top three winners of the Individual category are Wong Yin Yin of SMK Puterijaya, Wilayah Persekutuan (Forms 1 – 3, secondary schools), Kan Chee Kong of SMK Sultan Abu Bakar, Pahang (Forms 4 – 6, secondary schools) and Gobalan A/L Virasinggam of Universiti Selangor or UNISEL (tertiary). Each of them receives a cash prize of RM3,000.

In the Group category, the first prize of RM6,000 is won by the team comprising Wong Mun Yee, Wong Tsein Jer and Wong Yin Yin from Wilayah Persekutuan. The Group category required a minimum of three players and maximum of four players for each team, of which at least two members must be students in a public or private secondary school in Malaysia.

For the implementation of the Education Programme, PIDM had designed learning tools for students to acquire knowledge in a creative and fun way – the MoneySmart Online Game, MoneySmart Board Game and the Bijak Wang comic book. The tools are generally designed to link a person’s various life stages with changing financial needs at each stage – pursuing education, joining the work force and pursuing a career, getting married, raising children and preparing for retirement. Students must apply different knowledge and skills in personal financial management to advance from one stage to the next in the form of an increase in income and ultimately, reach the finishing point of retirement.

The full list of winners in the MoneySmart Online Game can be accessed on PIDM’s website (www.pidm.gov.my) or the MoneySmart Online Game website (www.pidmmoneysmart.com.my). All winners have been notified and arrangements are being made by PIDM to deliver the prizes to them.
