Membership is compulsory for all commercial banks (including foreign banks operating in Malaysia), finance companies licensed under the Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989 (BAFIA) and all Islamic banks licensed under the Islamic Banking Act 1983 (IBA). For this purpose, membership in the deposit insurance system shall be a legal precondition for these licensed institutions to accept deposits.
