Kuala Lumpur, 6 March 2014: Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PIDM), in collaboration with the Malaysian Insurance Institute (MII), awarded certificates to 31 trainers from six insurance companies and takaful operators in a certification ceremony for its Train-the-Trainer (TTT) programme in Kuala Lumpur today.
The programme, which is accredited by MII, covers topics on the financial consumer protection systems administered by PIDM, namely, the Deposit Insurance System (DIS) and the Takaful and Insurance Benefits Protection System (TIPS). As part of this collaboration, in 2013, PIDM has conducted three TTT sessions.
The TTT programme for PIDM insurer members was designed in collaboration with MII to train and certify speakers from insurance companies and takaful operators to conduct briefings on the financial consumer protection systems.
“We are pleased to collaborate with MII on this programme. MII’s accreditation confirms that the programme has met with the stringent standards required in the industry for training,” said Mr JP Sabourin, PIDM Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
“The 31 certified personnel will conduct briefings to employees and agents of their respective companies. It is intended that the agents should in turn share the information with policy owners,” he added.
PIDM also signed collaborative agreements with the six insurer members that had enrolled their personnel for the TTT programme, namely Etiqa Insurance Berhad, Great Eastern Life Assurance (M) Berhad, Great Eastern Takaful Berhad, Manulife Insurance Berhad, Prudential BSN Takaful Berhad and Takaful Ikhlas Sdn Bhd.
“We are very encouraged by the industry’s positive response to this programme and we hope to have more insurer members participating in 2014. We are also working at establishing similar arrangements with other member institutions,” he added.
At the ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur, PIDM Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Dr Abdul Samad Haji Alias presented certificates to the pioneer batch of trainers witnessed by Mr Sabourin and MII Chief Operating Officer (COO), En Mohd Taipor Suhadah. Also present at the event were En Zafri Ab Halim, CEO, Great Eastern Takaful Berhad, En Azim Mithani, CEO, Prudential BSN Takaful Berhad and Haji Ab Latiff Abu Bakar, CEO, Takaful Ikhlas Sdn Bhd. Etiqa Insurance Berhad was represented by En Muhammad Adli Alias, Head of Etiqa Academy.
Meanwhile MII COO En Mohd Taipor applauded the programme, saying that “this joint initiative has greatly helped both PIDM and MII reach out to insurance and takaful agents across Malaysia.”
“Apart from this programme, this is the fourth year we have been collaborating with PIDM to organise and support industry briefings on its enhanced financial consumer protection system, specifically on TIPS. MII greatly appreciates the support and partnership with PIDM towards achieving our common objective,” he added.
To date, PIDM has collaborative arrangements with the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA), the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Hua Zong) and a number of PIDM member institutions. The Corporation is also looking to collaborate with other groups to reach out to all communities across Malaysia.
