Kuala Lumpur, 6 September 2017: Since its inception in 2010, the Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PIDM) Undergraduate Scholarship Programme has given 101 individuals the opportunity to set themselves up in life with further studies. This year, PIDM has awarded 21 new scholarships to deserving young Malaysians.
“A key criteria of PIDM’s Undergraduate Scholarship Programme, other than academic achievements and potential, is that the scholars must come from financially challenged backgrounds. The programme is intended to give them with the opportunity to focus on their studies here in Malaysia without financial worries. The programme also offers mentors, drawn from PIDM’s senior management, to help counsel and advise scholars,” said PIDM Chief Executive Officer, Rafiz Azuan Abdullah. There is also now an alumni group of graduates from among its scholars who also help support PIDM’s current scholars.
These scholars have expressed the appreciation for the ability to further their education, and for the opportunity to focus on their studies, achieve their aspirations and ultimately contribute back to society.
“My dream is to inspire children to seek education and stay in school no matter what background they come from. Receiving this scholarship will help me to continue my studies and pursue my ambition to work in the financial services industry. I hope to give back to society after graduating,” said Niveetha Subramaniam, 19, a business administration student at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris.
“Growing up in a poor family is not an obstacle for me to excel in my studies. My financial situation and belief that education is the key to a better future are what drove me to work harder. Thanks to the opportunity given by PIDM, I can now fully concentrate on doing my best to become an auditor one day,” said Wong Yong Sheng, 19. He will enrol as an accounting student at University Malaya next month.
Meanwhile, another recipient, Siti Nuraini Sofiya Samad has her late father to thank for her success thus far. The student from Jitra, Kedah, shared that, despite being bedridden for many years prior to his passing away, her late father had made sure that education was a top priority for all of his children.
“My love for mathematics coupled with my late father’s encouragement gave me the drive to pursue my ambition of becoming an actuary. This scholarship will give me the support I need to complete my degree in actuarial science at Universiti Teknologi MARA,” she said.
Recipients of the PIDM Undergraduate Scholarship Programme are selected based on academic and extracurricular achievements, communication skills, maturity and potential leadership qualities, as well as access to financial support. The PIDM scholarship comes without bonding and provides for funding of tuition fees and living expenses as well as books and equipment. The scholarship recipients are pursuing programmes in a wide spectrum of disciplines including Accounting, Actuarial Science, Business Management and Law.
