Kuala Lumpur, 25 September 2023: Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PIDM) recently granted scholarships to 20 students through the PIDM Undergraduate Scholarship Programme in an award ceremony attended by scholars’ family members, newly graduated scholars, and PIDM’s Board members and senior management.
The scholarship programme was established in 2010 and has awarded scholarships to 228 students pursuing diverse fields of study. This year, PIDM received 1,189 applications from students who wish to pursue their tertiary education.
Rafiz Azuan Abdullah, the Chief Executive Officer of PIDM, highlighted the importance of investing in the future generation and igniting their potential to become skilled, responsible, and innovative individuals poised to face challenges head-on, and contribute to the economy and betterment of the country.
“Empowering the next generation through education is a commitment that PIDM holds dear. We are confident that with the right support, they will continue to excel academically and play pivotal roles in advancing our nation and society. Each scholar carries great potential, and we are proud to be an integral part of their journey. We hope they will achieve their ambitions illustriously, as we have seen with our previous scholarship graduates,” said Rafiz.
Cham Chiao Wen from Sandakan, Sabah, was thankful to receive the PIDM Undergraduate Scholarship award as it will help her financially. Chiao Wen took on multiple part-time jobs to help support her family. She was balancing school, work, and household responsibilities, and still managed to complete all her exams with flying colours.
“I aspire to become an auditor, and with PIDM’s mentoring programme throughout my studies, I can gain valuable insights, advice, and practical knowledge beyond what textbooks can offer, significantly enhancing my learning experience and personal growth,” said Chiao Wen, who is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Accounting degree at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
Nor Sahara binti Abd Haniff, who hails from Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, said she found out about the scholarship through a dedicated scholarship information channel on an instant messaging app and applied as soon as she saw the alert. She aims to be a successful entrepreneur and will begin her degree studies in Business Administration at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
“Scholars like me receive financial support, industry exposure, professional development, mentorship, and networking opportunities through the PIDM Undergraduate Scholarship Programme. These benefits can greatly enhance my academic and professional journey,” said Nor Sahara.
Jeevanesh a/l Gunalan from Klang, Selangor, said he was happy and relieved when he got selected. The aspiring artificial intelligence (AI) engineer will pursue a Bachelor in Artificial Intelligence degree at Universiti Malaya (UM). He looks up to his father, who shows him the importance of dedication, patience, hard work, and staying positive.
“My family is my biggest motivation to keep succeeding. With this scholarship award, I can focus on my academic pursuits without financial constraints. I will do my best in my studies and dedicate my success to my parents as a sign of appreciation for all their sacrifices,” Jeevanesh added.
The PIDM Undergraduate Scholarship Programme grants scholars the financial support they need to proceed with their tertiary education. This comprehensive aid encompasses tuition fees, living expenses, and learning aids. Beyond the financial assistance, PIDM extends mentorship opportunities to scholars from its employees and the scholarship programme alumni, and the chance to undertake internships at PIDM to complete their academic journey.
